Old Brutus Historical Society & Museum

To help the visitors better understand the construction of the Erie Canal as it passed through the Town in the 1800’s, the Museum has models of both a lock and an aqueduct. The extensive Erie Canal Resource Center contains slides, books, pictures, and other pertinent items. Don’t miss seeing a replica of an Erie Canal lumber boat cabin, some of the tools used to build the Canal, and a few of the commercial items shipped on the waterway.

Centerport Aqueduct Park

This is an ideal spot for a picnic and to visit the site of the Centerport Aqueduct that opened in 1855 and originally carried the Erie Canal over a confluence of North Brook and Cold Springs Brook.

Old Erie Canal Heritage Park

This unique new facility first opened in the Fall of 2016, features a glimpse into authentic life on the Erie Canal in the mid-19th to early 20th centuries. With access from both the NYS Thruway and Route 31, the intriguing walls of the former lock beckon NYS Thruway travelers to pause in their journey to discover history at a totally unique attraction a cluster of renovated structures, including the Erie House Tavern and Hotel, a mule barn and a blacksmith shop, all associated with the remnants of enlarged Erie Canal Lock 52. The centerpiece and, indeed, the crown jewel of this site is the newly completed Visitor’s Center that features historical artifacts and interactive display materials.
Montezuma Heritage Park

The Montezuma Heritage Park consists of over 165 acres of parkland that holds many significant natural and historic resource sites along the Seneca River/Erie Canal that tell the story of New York State’s Canal System from 1820 to today. It includes eleven trails located along interpreted historic sites of the Erie and Cayuga-Seneca Canals. The remains of the magnificent Richmond Aqueduct, second largest aqueduct on the Enlarged Erie Canal, can be visited along the original towpath trail. Enjoy walking, biking, cross-country skiing, bird watching, and fishing.
